Support:   Backup Fails to Complete

When Backup for Workgroups performs the backup process it stores information about the files that are backed up in a set of database files.  These database files are held at both the Backup Server and at the Backup Client.

When there is a problem with a database file, Backup for Workgroups has a built-in repair utility that you can use to rebuild the database file.  The process to repair the database files is based on the error reported during the backup process.

Repair the Database Files at the Backup Server:  If you receive any of the following error messages, then you will need to perform the repair process at the Backup Server:

  • The Backup Server cannot write to its database files
  • The Backup Server shuts down during the backup
  • The Backup Client reports the Backup was Interrupted for a particular Client

Repair the Database Files at the Backup Client:  If you receive any of the following error messages, then you will need to perform the repair process at the Backup Client:

  • The Backup Client cannot access its local files
  • The Backup Client shuts down during the backup Process

To Repair the database files at the Backup Server

  1. Run the Backup for Workgroups User Interface
  2. Go to the Tools > Preferences > Verifier menu
  3. In the top half of the panel (in the section labeled "Database Verifier") press the "Run Now" button
  4. Press "OK" to close the Preferences dialog box
  5. Go to the Status panel to view the results of the database verifier
  6. If the verifier finds any problems, it will rebuild the database files from log files
  7. When this process is complete, the Clients may resume normal backups

To Repair the database files at the Backup Client

  1. Run the Backup Client User Interface
  2. Go to the Tools > Database Management menu
  3. Press the button labeled "Download from the Backup Server Now..."
  4. When the download completes repeat the backup using the "Backup Now" button or wait for the scheduled backup to perform
  5. If the problem has not been resolved, go to Tools > Database Management menu
  6. Press the button labeled "Rebuild Database from Logs Now..."
  7. When the rebuild completes, repeat the backup using the "Backup Now" button or wait for the scheduled backup to perform
