Backup Microsoft Windows 2003 SBS (or Standard or Enterprise)
Backup for Workgroups is perfect for backing up your Microsoft Small Business Server 2003. Below are the complete
instructions for what you need to purchase and what the best install plan is.
What to purchase: total cost = $199.00
1 – Backup for Workgroups Client License = $199.00
The Client License will backup the OS, Windows Registry, installed
applications and any data files not in use on the SBS 2003 Server.
The Open File Add-On allows the Client to include any files that are open including the: Exchange Server
database, Active Directory database, MS SQL databases, Terminal Service files, License Server files, and any other
files or databases that are in-use at the time of the backup on the SBS 2003 Server.
How to Setup:
Backup for Workgroups consists of two components: a Client component that performs the backup of the SBS 2003 Server,
and a Backup Server component that receives the backup data from the Client and stores it on the hard drive storage device.
Keep in mind that you will need to have a hard drive storage device with enough free hard disk space to hold the
SBS 2003 Server backup data. Easiest thing to do is purchase a large external USB or Firewire storage device
and connect it to the server and store the backup data there. You can also use any local or networked NAS device too.
How to Install:
-
Download the "bfwsetup.exe" file from the Lockstep web site
-
Run the "bfwsetup.exe" file and install the Backup Server software on the Server C: drive
Make sure to tell it to store the backup data on your external USB hard drive.
-
Setup the SBS 2003 Server as a Client with a Client name and password. Make sure to
activate the Open File Add-On so all files that are in-use are included in every backup.
-
Run the "bfwsetup.exe" file again and install the Client software on the C: drive, using the same Client name
and password.
-
Use the Manage Backup Sets wizard to specify the data you want to backup
and schedule a time for it to happen.
At the scheduled time, the Client performs the backup and sends
the data over to the Backup Server.
The Backup Server sends the data to the external hard drive for storage.
