Installation Steps

When you download the 30-day trial version of Backup for Workgroups, a copy of the executable program BFWSETUP.EXE is saved on your computer.  Use the Setup Program to install and configure Backup for Workgroups on the computer(s) you want to backup.

The Setup Program will ask you questions and adjust what it installs based on the selections you make. The Setup Program includes the Backup Client software, the Data Repository software and all of the Add-On products.  Everything is included in one download so you do not need to download anything else.

You can use the links below to read about the steps that Backup for Workgroups will walk you through before running the Setup Program at your location.

How to Install Backup for Workgroups to Backup One Computer

1.       Run the Backup for Workgroups Setup program.

Welcome Screen.

On the Welcome screen, choose the option that allows you to Set up Backup for Workgroups for the first time.

2.       Backup This Computer.

On the Backup This Computer screen, choose Yes to include this computer in the backup process. Both the Data Repository Manager and the Backup Client software will be installed on this computer.

3.       Software Folders.

On the Software Folders screen, you need to identify the location for two (2) different items.

  • In the top type-in field, identify the installation path for the Data Repository Manager.
  • In the bottom type-in field, identify the location for the Backup Client software.

4.       Initial Storage Location.

On the Initial Storage Location screen, identify the location of one of the disk-based device you plan to use to hold your backup data.

  • If you plan on using more than one device as part of your Data Repository storage, you can enter the location of the second device at a later time. For now, you need to enter the path of at least one storage device.

5.       Service Account.

  • If you are installing on Windows 2003/XP/2000/NT, the Data Repository Manager runs as a service. Enter the account details for an existing Windows user account that has the rights to both run services and access the storage devices using the credentials of this Windows user.
  • If you are installing on Windows 98/ME, the Data Repository runs as an application, and the setup program skips this step.

6.       Email Setup.

On the Email Setup screen, provide Backup for Workgroups with information needed to communicate with your email server.

  • In the top portion of the screen, use DNS or specify your email server name and logon credentials.
  • In the lower portion, enter the email address at which you would like to receive backup program reports.

7.       Backup Client Options.

If you are installing on Windows 2003, you will be presented with the Backup Clients Options screen. We recommend using the Open File Add-On to include Exchange Server, Active Directory, and open file data in the backup process.

8.       Backup Schedule.

On the Backup Schedule screen, specify the day and times of when you want this computer backed up.

9.       Summary.

On the Summary screen, you are welcome to review your selections and if you want to make any changes, use the Back button to navigate through the setup screens again. If you are satisfied with your selections, press Next.

10.    Installing…

The Backup for Workgroups setup program will copy the appropriate files to your computer and open both the Data Repository Manager and Backup Client software on your desktop.

11.    Backup Client.

The Backup Client software runs. To start your first backup, press the Backup Now button. Or, let the first backup occur at the scheduled backup time. (11pm for servers, 12pm Noon for workstations). To learn more about the Backup Client software, please see Backing Up Your Data with the Client Software in this user guide.
